This is my initial sketch of Guts from the manga Berserk. I feel like I captured some of the melancholy but with it being a sketch for a linocut, it has to be cleaner for when I do the carving. I have much to learn yet for the line art for when it transfers over to the carving block.
The shading on the cloak in the picture won't transfer very easily and will just look like a solid block of ink and won't show any texture. The idea is to have it on a 6x8 or 5x7 sized block so the detail can be there but not as in depth if you were to make a block print at 8x10.
I will have to do some more sketches and maybe some shadow blocking to get the form of Guts just right and then blow it up on my iPad and refine it that way. I want to it to be a faithful homage to Kentaro Miura's style and character.
